Senior BJP leader and former Minister Anil Vij on Sunday said he will stake a claim for the chief minister’s post, based on his seniority, if the party wins in the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls.
The six-time MLA’s remarks come at a time when the BJP has already declared incumbent Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as the party’s face for the chief minister’s post.
Speaking to the media, the former Haryana Minister said, “I never sought anything from the party till today… But, this time, based on my seniority, I claim for the chief minister’s post… people from Haryana are coming to meet me. Even in Ambala, people tell me that I am senior-most why I did not become Chief Minister. On-demand of the people, and on the basis of seniority, this time I will stake claim to become chief minister.”
“If the party appoints me as the Chief Minister of Haryana, I will change the destiny and picture of Haryana,” Vij added.
In March this year, Anil Vij was not able to find a place in the new Haryana cabinet when Manohar Lal Khattar was replaced by Nayab Singh Saini as chief minister.
The BJP has fielded Vij from the Ambala Cantt Assembly seat and on September 11, he filed his nomination in the presence of senior party leaders.
Polling in Haryana will take place on October 5 while the votes will be counted on October 8.
The BJP, under the leadership of Nayab Singh Saini, is eyeing a third term in the state, while the Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress is aiming to regain power in the agriculture-dominated state after ten years.
